Gregs Birthday

Saturday was Gregs birthday and he turned 35. I get pretty excited
about my birthday but I think I’m probably just a little more over the
top when it comes to his 🙂  This year I planned a whole day for us and
capped it with a party and it took me about a week to execute it

The day before his birthday I ran around picking up decorations and
putting the finishing touches on his cake. I’m especially proud of this
cake because I worked with a few mediums and techniques that I hadnt
done before. The ball itself was a new experience (Wilton sports ball
cake pan at Michaels) and it took a long time to bake compared to the
square cakes I used for the base. I made chocolate fondant and except
for it cracking a little while rolling it wasnt too bad to work with
and the icing on the ball itself was starburst dotting (Wilton icing
tip #16) and the stitching was just straight icing with tip #3. I had
to keep refridgerating the cake periodically while icing the ball
portion of it because the icing would get warm and the texture was
getting messed up but as you can see it all worked out in the end, even
if it did take me almost 5 hours to decorate 🙂

So, the day before the party I had decorations, a vase of white roses,
a batman hellium balloon, snacks, gifts, paper plates, cups, napkins
and bottles of pop hidden all over the place so I had to make "No Greg"
signs and post them on the doors of the rooms where things were hidden.
It wasnt too hard to keep him out of those areas because we went to the
Western Fair that night and when we got home we went to bed. The
Western Fair was really fun btw – we saw all the farm animals, walked
the entire park, ate fries with tons of salt and vinegar and Greg won
me a little purple dolphin at ski ball to go with the blue penguin he
won me last year 🙂

The next morning when he got up I had made a trail from the bedroom to
the dining room of little pink hearts on the floor, and on the table
was his birthday stocking, card and the vase of white roses. We ate
breakfast in there (eggs benedict, his favorite) and then drank coffee
and talked. I had to go out for 2 hours to a ladies craft function at
the church but I used my time to make a banner for the party that
night. It was a lot of fun, even if the girls laughed at me 😀

When I got home we went to the mall and shopped for a few hours (Greg
wanted to buy clothes with his birthday money from his parents) and had
lunch while we were there. He dropped me off at home so I could set up
for the party without him being under-foot and left to go browse some
more shops. I quickly rearranged our dining room, put out all our spare
chairs, made a veggy tray, hung decorations and got the music going.
With the pizza ordered and the guests on their way, Greg got home and
helped me do the last touches and then we got ready for the evening.

By 5:30 we had almost 30 people in our place. It was fantastic – people
were snacking on the chips and veggies, everyone was catching up with
each other, we had a huge coffee urn perking in the kitchen and when
the pizza arrived at 6pm everyone was ready to eat. Around 6:45 I
ducked into the kitchen to mount the top portion of the cake onto the
bottom and light the candles while a friend of ours lead everyone in a
round of "Happy Birthday". Greg was so happy with the cake and that
just made the whole evening for me 🙂

By 7:15 we were cleaning up the paper plates and everyone was packing
up to head to the bowling alley. We played 2 games and I think everyone
had a good time. The party broke up around 9:30 and everyone parted
company at the bowling alley. Greg and I headed back to our place with
his parents and after about an hour we had it all cleaned up and back
to normal. We sat down with some dessert and then Greg opened his cards
and gifts that some of our friends left and he opened the ones from his
kids and I. (the game RISK, a book he wanted and a dvd of the 2 games
in 1992 and 93 when the Blue Jays won the world series).

Greg said it was a perfect birthday and I’m glad 🙂 The next day was
the first day of Sunday School at our church and my first day of
teaching a class! I’ll blog about all that next time. Ciao!

  1. you’re so funny.  here i am thinking that  you have nothing to do now that you’re unemployed and you should be blogging every day; but apparently you’ve been busy!  i’m curious to know how sunday school went, so you’ll have to blog about that soon.  as i said on facebook, the cake looks fantastic.  i’m curious to know how you mounted it on the cake after it was already decorated.  in my mind it would involve a lot of breath-holding and praying.   anywhoo… cheers!
